Copyright Policy

Last updated: October 1, 2026 · Effective: [Launch date]

The short version

  • Every Gist is written in our own words from facts gathered across several sources.
  • We don't summarize copyrighted books, quote song lyrics, or reuse other people's writing.
  • If you believe a Gist infringes your copyright, send us a notice and we will review it quickly.

[GistWise, Inc.] ("GistWise," "we," "us") respects the intellectual property of authors, publishers, artists and creators, and expects users of our Services to do the same. This Copyright Policy explains how we create original content and how to report a concern. It is part of our Terms of Service.

1. How we keep Gists original

Facts and ideas are free for everyone to learn from, but the way someone expresses them belongs to them. Our content process is built around that principle:

  • Many sources, our own words. Each Gist draws on at least three independent, reputable sources. Facts are restated in our own words before any writing begins.
  • Writing from facts, not from articles. The writing step works from a list of short facts, never from the original text of a source.
  • No summaries of copyrighted works. We don't create Gists that summarize or retell a specific copyrighted book, course, article or film. When an idea is associated with a person or a book, we credit them by name and explain the idea using other sources.
  • Limited quotation. At most one short quotation per Gist, with the speaker named. We never reproduce song lyrics, poems or film and TV dialogue.
  • Automatic and human checks. Every script is automatically compared against its sources to catch copied wording, and a person reviews every Gist before it is published.
  • Licensed voices and images. Narration uses licensed synthetic voices, never imitations of real people, and artwork is created or licensed by us.

2. Reporting copyright infringement

If you believe content on GistWise infringes your copyright, please send a written notice to our Copyright Agent (section 3) under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512). To be effective, your notice must include:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature, as the copyright owner or a person authorized to act on the owner's behalf.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed (or a representative list, if several works are involved).
  3. Identification of the material you believe is infringing, with enough detail for us to find it, such as the Gist title, the topic it appears in, the Gist ID or a link, and the timestamp in the audio if relevant.
  4. Your contact information: name, mailing address, telephone number and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or are authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

Notices that do not include this information may not be valid, but we will still review what you send and may contact you for more details.

3. Our designated Copyright Agent

Send copyright notices and counter-notices to:

Copyright Agent[Name or title, e.g. Copyright Agent]
Company[GistWise, Inc.]

Emailcopyright@gistwise.ai
Phone[Phone number]

Our designated agent is registered with the US Copyright Office's DMCA Designated Agent Directory. Please send only copyright-related notices to this address; other messages may not receive a response. For other questions, see section 8.

4. What happens after we receive a notice

  • We confirm we received your notice, usually within 2 business days.
  • We review the Gist against its sources and our content records. Where a notice appears valid, we promptly remove or disable access to the material, typically within 24 hours of receiving a complete notice, while we investigate.
  • We then rewrite the Gist so it no longer uses the material in question, or remove it permanently, and tell you what we did.
  • If the notice concerns content provided by a user, we will also notify that user and give them a copy of the notice.

5. Counter-notification

If material you provided was removed and you believe it was removed by mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notice to our Copyright Agent that includes:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed and where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district in which your address is located (or, if your address is outside the United States, any judicial district in which GistWise may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who submitted the original notice or their agent.

If we receive a valid counter-notice, we may restore the material in 10 to 14 business days unless the original complainant notifies us that they have filed a court action to restrain the activity.

6. Repeat infringers

In appropriate circumstances, we will disable or terminate the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe the copyrights of others.

7. Misrepresentation

Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly and materially misrepresents that material is infringing, or that material was removed by mistake, may be liable for damages. If you are unsure whether material infringes your rights, consider consulting an attorney before sending a notice. Uses such as commentary, criticism, education and research may be permitted under fair use.
